Blogging takes off - Is that good or bad?

If you think Blogging is something you do as a warm-down exercise after jogging, then you’re in serious need of a marketing terminology make-over. Blogs can transform your search position on Google at low cost, which can have incredibly positive benefits for your business.

Blogs (weB LOGS) have finally attracted some main stream media hype and we really want you guys to take full advantage of it - but only if it’s right for you! Like all new communication channels, the hardest part of blogging is actually getting started. It’s really important to get your hands dirty and to feel how rewarding it is to type your thoughts on a subject - then click a few buttons and publish them immediately online - no more gatekeepers! Check out our blog at ilovepdg.com - feel free to leave comments on anything that grabs your interest - or why not listen to a podcast while you’re there?

Blogging can help you and your business on a number of levels. You can very quickly become an online guru in a chosen field, engage at a tribal level with new audiences, and even start to affect industry or public opinion not only in your own ‘local environment’, but globally. If you’re a serial blogger, you’ll find that you start to move up the Google listings, which if you’re blogging about corporate issues, can mean a pay rise.

Blog content can populate pages on existing web sites using RSS (Really Simple Syndication), a really cool solution for keeping pages up to date with the latest news and views. And there is a dedicated search engine for blog and RSS content at www.technorati.com, more on this next time. As always, there‘s a window here for “early adopters” to make best advantage of this knowledge - so let’s go for it!

New research from the US shows we also need to be careful, blogs can also be your downfall. As blogs are easily indexed by search engines, have prominent keywords and automatically syndicate their content to other users, anyone can make the blog headlines and shoot up the Google listings for the wrong reasons! Several companies have already started to notice how quickly negative stories can appear on the first page of Google.

We’ve been blogging now for 6 months and are happy to talk readers through the ups and downs of it.
